Why do we need MFA?
In today’s digital world, protecting your online accounts is more important than ever, and relying on passwords alone is no longer sufficient. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) provides an extra layer of security by requiring users to verify their identity through multiple methods before gaining access to an account. Typically, MFA combines something you know (like a password), something you have (like a smartphone, hardware token, or access to an email account), and sometimes even something you are (like a fingerprint or facial recognition).
The necessity of MFA stems from the rising sophistication of cyberattacks. Hackers can easily obtain or guess passwords through phishing, credential stuffing, or data breaches. With MFA in place, even if a password is compromised, unauthorized access is significantly harder because the attacker would also need the second factor—such as a code sent to your email, a mobile device, or a biometric verification—to log in. MFA not only protects sensitive information and financial assets but also helps organizations comply with regulatory standards and maintain user trust. Implementing MFA is a simple yet highly effective step in safeguarding personal and professional data against the ever-growing threat of cybercrime.
How MFA Works
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by asking for more than just a password. First, you enter your password like usual. Then, the system asks for a second form of verification. You can pick from the setup options for this verification. The default option will be your MLS email but you can add additional options such as a mobile device or FIDO/biometric device, such as a fingerprint or face scan.
Can I have MFA turned off for my account?
No. Unfortunately, you cannot turn off Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for your account. Our IDP (Identity Provider) of Clareity, who we use for login management, enforced MFA across all accounts, requiring us to activate it without the ability to opt out.
Adding a cell phone for MFA
You can add a cellular or mobile device to your MLS account to allow for text message verification.
Please follow this video guide for assistance with this process. MLS Staff can also assist in adding a mobile device for you. It is recommended to add a mobile device as an extra means to access your account.
Adding a FIDO/Biometric option for MFA
When prompted to select a source for MFA, you can select to add a FIDO/biometric device. Please select the device you wish to add and follow the instructions provided.
